Summer Events

This summer has been a flurry of activity. With a series of major events that started in May, my dance card was filled. There were so many exciting workshops, festivals and events throughout California and Nevada that I put thousands of miles on my truck.

Throughout the summer, my hubby Barry joined me at several events. If you like the photos on the left, click through to see more.

So here is a brief overview of some of the best events I attended over the course of the summer.

Mesmera
High Desert Hip Fest

High Desert Hip Fest
The Two Old Bags of Reno put together a fabulous workshop series featuring two of the hottest dance instructors anywhere. Fahtiem (pictured above left), whose elegant performance style lights the room and rivets the audiences attention every time she steps on stage, taught an inspiring workshop. Mesmera (pictured left) was hot - hot - hot, with a sizzling workshop and two show-stopping performances that rocked the house. I had the pleasure to perform and opened an incredible showcase of talents from local Nevada teachers, professional dancers and award winning troupes. It was an outstanding two days.

Style File: A Visual
Vocabulary Of Middle
Eastern Dance Costume

Cairo Carnival
I was delighted to vend at Cairo Carnival, sponsored by MECDA. The show was in a new location and on a new weekend, but was supported by dancers from across Southern California and beyond. It was a great chance to catch up with old friends, and the shopping was supreme, with something for everybody's taste. We debuted the final completed version of Style File: A Visual Vocabulary of Middle Eastern Dance at ths event and sold out of our supplies!

Winner of
Wiggles and Giggles

Wiggles of the West
I returned to Reno for the annual Wiggles of the West tournament, sponsored by the Two Old Bags. This show is one of my favorites of the year. The competition was fierce, and there were some lovely talented dancers vying for cash prizes, gift bags and trophies. The workshops were very informative. If you ever get a chance to take a workshop with Artemis and Siwa - don't miss it. I also taught the "Stuff and Fluff - bra making" workshop there and next Costumer's Notes issue will focus on bra-making.

Summer Caravan
Wow - I managed to squeeze into this event as a vendor, and boy, am I glad I went! This is a great show, put together by Shukriya and her band of helpers from Rakkasah, it's more intimate and with a decided tribal focus. With so many outstanding dancers throughout Northern California performing in the line-up, an eclectic assortment of vendors and a beautiful venue, this was one of my favorite venues of the year.

Ireena on her B-Day
Ireena's Birthday Bash
Perhaps my favorite performance of the year was this August at Menara's in San Jose to celebrate the birthday of Ireena, an incredible dancer who splits her time between Reno and San Francisco Bay Area. The line-up was quite good, and I was pleased to perform to live music by Walking Maqsoom. The show was a blast with performances by top dancers from the around the region. Some of my favorites included the Persian styling of Parri and the birthday girl Ireena who brought the house down in a fantastic finale. These two ladies put on some outstanding events throughout the Bay Area.

Fall Events

Desert Dance Festival
Presented by Dunia, Desert Dance Festival is San Jose's largest Middle Eastern Dance Venue. This year, the show is in a new venue. If you are in Northern California, drop in and check it out.

Double Crown Tournament
Hosted by Zaina Hart, this is an exciting dance tournament and I am excited to head up to Portland OR to give a hand as a vendor and judge. If you are in the area, stop by my booth and say "Hi."

Festival Fantasia
Ellen Cruz presents Festival Fantasia in Sebastapol, CA. With strong tribal leanings and set in the breathtaking beauty of wine country, this events is one of my absolute favorites each year.
