Reading List - Sultana's Tent

A Canadian magazine devoted to Middle Eastern dance.

Cover of Sultana's Tent January 2002This little gem of a magazine is fresh off the presses from Victoria BC and filled to the brim with lots of interesting facts, fun columns, and useful suggestions. Although produced in Canada, this magazine isn't locked into a particular regional style. There is a lot of good information in this magazine, but it's accessible. So no matter if you are a beginner or an experienced performer, there is something for you.

This is a magazine with a lot of personality, which shines through the writing of the regular columns. My favorite is "The Question" which asks several high-profile dancer personalities a short list of questions related to our craft. The responses are illuminating and thought provoking. It's interesting to read the different approaches, responses and ideologies of dancers from around the world.

Other regular columns are just as interesting. The monthly Dancer's Horoscope is a delightfully fun motivational tool. I'm convinced that I'm every sign! There are other regular columns such as "Mudras," a monthly suggestion for a hand gesture, pose or movement to add to your dance repertoire. "Myrranda's Musings" is another regular feature that addresses a different dance related subject pulled from one dancer's bag of tricks. From makeup tips to audience interaction, reading her column is like chatting with a friend or trusted teacher. Other regular features include recipes perfect for taking to your next hafla and an ongoing list of deities entitled "Oh My Goddess." Cover of Sultana's Tent, March 2002

But I must not leave out the featured articles, which are the heart and soul of any magazine. They address a wide scope of interests and tastes and vary from dance technique to product reviews, performer profiles to useful facts for students and teachers alike.

In the world of electronic media, it's good to sit down and pick up a magazine and crawl into my favorite chair, sip some Moroccan mint tea and enjoy a fun and friendly read like Sultana's Tent.
