Reversible Hip Wrap: Draping the Pattern

In February, I described the process of making a reversible hip wrap. After many e-mail messages, I have found a model to volunteer to help with this process. Here are the photo docutments of my draping session with Johara of Sacramento.

Make sure that your model is wearing a closely fitted
garment. To do a hip wrap drape, leggings, bikeshorts or a unitard
make good choices. You will be pinning into this cloth so
make sure that's okay with your model before you get started.

The first step is to mark the top edge of the hip wrap.
This is the position that it will lay on the body.
For this demo, I have used a wide gros-grain ribbon to
indicate where the hipwrap will be positioned.

The supplies needed for this project are listed here:
www.davina.org/CNFeb2001/HipWrap.html
I have selected a gingham material for this project
because it's easy to see the grain line of the cloth.

Before you drape the cloth, cut a pieces of fabric larger
by a few inches, than the finished size of the garment
you are draping. Fold in half and mark
the center back. Also draw a line to indicate the top edge.

Pin the fabric onto the body. Line up the top line at the center
back with the ribbon marker. Pin into place. Also pin at
the area where the hip is fullest. This will be about 3" - 5" down from the topline depending on your figure and
how low you plan on wearing the hip sash.

Smooth the fabric along this fullest part of the hip and pin into place, keeping the grain lined up with the center
back and the cross grain perpendicular to the floor.

Avoid stretching the fabric at this stage.

Next, smooth along the top line from the center back
towards the side until you come to the position
for the dart. This will be about 3" to 5" from the center back.
Mark the top of the first dart leg.

Next, smooth in from the side towards the center back until you reach the dart leg. You will find a pleat of cloth
has formed. This will become your dart.
Pin into place.
