Shopping Tips
January is the best time to take advantage of the after-holiday sales
that are taking place at retail establishments everywhere. Here are a few
ideas to keep in mind when shopping:
Get body glitter, metallic colors and dramatic lipsticks from the holiday
cosmetic collections. Shimmery glistening cosmetics marketed for New Years
celebrations can provide that perfect shimmery touch for the dancer year
round.
Look for brushes, not only in the cosmetic department, but also in
art supply stores. After the holidays, many craft and art supply stores
have excellent sales to clear out not only holiday items, but the materials
used to create these items as well.
Shop accessories department for items that can be integrated into dance
costuming. Glitter shawls, beaded collars and long elegant gloves are just
a few of the items that go on clearance after the holidays in the accessories
department of your favorite department stores.
January is the month when lingerie goes on sale, to clear the previous
year's stock. Watch the sales fliers and ads for your favorite stores.
Look for bras with lots of built in shaping and firm cups suitable for
embellishment. Look for strapless and pushup styles and don't forget to
check in both department and specialty lingerie shops.
Rhinestone and other costume jewelry generally gets deeply discounted
in the January and February sales. Look for pieces that can integrate with
many different looks. Most experienced dancers have a wardrobe of jewelry
to select from before a performance. Be savvy and build your collection
from the sale racks.
For down and dirty costuming, check out the tree-trimming sections
for beads on strings that can be draped and festooned onto bras and belts
for quick and dirty, budget costuming. Also look at products for alternative
uses. Jewelry as costume embellishments and table cloths for harem pants
can provide just the hint of luxury for a just a small financial investment.
Remember red is one of the most popular colors for belly dance costumes.
